    <em>Opinión Quiral</em> colloquium about embryo selection and genetic counseling

    The Fundació Vila Casas hosts, the next Tuesday 30 March, the second colloquium Opinión Quiral of this year. These colloquia are intended to contribute to the formation of good health criteria for the benefit of society. The documents , published jointly by the Fundació Vila Casas and the Scientific Communication Observatory (OCC), are the written expression of these symposia.

    The next meeting will address the debate on embryo selection and genetic counseling, theme selected a proposal from the OCC. The conference will include presentations by Jordi Camí, director general of , and the physician and sociologist Albert J. Jovell, general manager of the Fundació Josep Laporte. The symposium will also be attended by representatives of various organizations related to the subject of debate.

    The Scientific Communication Observatory has organised the season "Cinema at Campus" in the Communication Campus of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Throughout spring, the campus auditorium will screen five movies related to science and its social repercussions. After each projection, it will start a debate about the controversias of scientific and social aspects appearing in the filme.

    Movie. Kuroi Ame (Black Rain).
    Director. Shohei Imamura.
    Year. 1989.
    Synopsis. Shizuma family lives in Hisohima when the atomic bombing on the city occurs. Yasuko is able to survive the explosion and gets away from nuclear annihilation. Five years later, Yasuko is living with his uncles and grandmother in a village that hosts many of those affected by the bomb. Her relatives are worried becaus it is time for Yasuko to be married. Despite her good appearance, she has already started to become ill from radiation.

    The Scientific Communication Observatory has organised the season "Cinema at Campus" in the Communication Campus of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Throughout spring, the campus auditorium will screen five movies related to science and its social repercussions. After each projection, it will start a debate about the controversias of scientific and social aspects appearing in the filme.

    Movie. Inherit the wind.
    Director. Stanley Kramer.
    Year. 1960.
    Synopsis. Remarkable adaptation of the play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee based on one of the most spectacular real episodes of U.S. jurisprudence. In the summer of 1925, in Tennessee, a fanatic preacher borught to court a young teacher, Bertram Cates (John T. Scopes in the real case), arrested in class to explain Darwin's theory of evolution, denying the divine creation of man as stated in the Bible. The contradictory theories of Darwinism and creationism crash in an explosive battle of beliefs between the defense attorney Henry Drummond (Spencer Tracy), and the ultraconservative Matthew Harrison Brady (Fredric March), which represented the prosecution. The trial, which had an enormous social significance and became a titanic battle between the defense attorney and prosecutor, as well as a media spectacle, because the defense was funded by a major newspaper and followed by a famous journalist of the moment.

    Synopsis. Life of Galileo Galilei, the brilliant wise who was born in Pisa in the sixteenth century, is considered one of the most remarkable scientists of all times. Their views about the Solar System and confirmation of the Copernican theory that Earth is not the center of the Universe led him to confront the powerful Catholic Church authorities. Based on the play by Bertolt Brecht, "Galileo" is a complete look at the nature of scientific creativity based on reason against obscurantist ideology of an era.

    The Scientific Communication Observatory has organised the season "Cinema at Campus" in the Communication Campus of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Throughout spring, the campus auditorium will screen five movies related to science and its social repercussions. After each projection, it will start a debate about the controversias of scientific and social aspects appearing in the filme.

    Movie. The man in the white suit.
    Director. Alexander Mackendrick.
    Year. 1951.
    Synopsis. A scientist invents a new textile material that never gets dirty or wears out and can last forever. The invention would revolutionize the industry. After conducting several tests, his boss offers him money and the chance to develop his invention. Obviously, such invention would be a revolution for the textile industry, but its consequences would become disastrous because it would destroy many jobs. Therefore, the tissue spreads panic among the other manufacturers because it would mean their ruin. They will try to hamper by all means the release of the new material. The plot makes a clever parable about industrial and economic interests, and technological advances.

    The president of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity ( KOFAC), Dr. Chung Yoon will give the talk The development of science, technology and science communication in Korea.

    The conference will take place within the framework of the Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication (IDEC - UPF), which is sponsored by the Novartis Institute of Biomedical Communication.

    The event will be chaired by the Rector of the University Pompeu Fabra, Josep Joan Moreso, and is open to the entire scientific, technological, business and journalistic Catalan community.     Synopsis. The film presents a transhumanist world. Children are selected through genetic control mechanisms to ensure that they arise with the best traits of their parents. A database is used to identify and classify those that have been genetically modified, which are called valid, and those who are born without any previous manipulation, called invalid. Characters are constantly struggling, with both society and themselves, to find their place in this world and its destiny according to their genes.

    Michael Frayn's <em>Copenhague</em>

    On Monday 13 September, the headquarters of the Institute of Continuing Education of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (IDEC-UPF) hosts the dramatized reading of the play "Copenhagen", by the English author Michael Frayn. The play opens the second part of the XV Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication, which manages and coordinates the Science Communication Observatory from the same university.

    The representation shall be borne by the company Teatre de la Incertesa and have the performers Gemma López, Jordi Andújar and Tone Salo, under the direction of Elisabet Alemany.

    "Copenhagen" is based on a meeting between the German physicist Werner Heisenberg and one who had been his teacher, the Danish Niels Bohr . The first, involved in the development of the Nazi atomic bomb, traveled to the Danish capital in 1941, in the middle of World War II, to talk to Bohr, involved later in the Manhattan Project. What motivated Heisenberg to make that trip?

    A tribute to Carl Sagan's <em>Cosmos</em>

    The 28th September 1980, the TV channel PBS issued The shores of the cosmic ocean, the first chapter of the series Cosmos led by the astronomer and science disseminator Carl Sagan.

    To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the premiere of the series that has aroused the audience's interest in science, the Observatory of Science Communication (OCC), with the collaboration of the newspaper Público, will pay tribute to the program and Sagan's figure on Tuesday September 28th, coinciding with the release date of Cosmos. The event, free and open to everyone, is framed into the 15th edition of the Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication of the Institut d'Educació Continuada (IDEC ) of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF).

    The event will account with the talks of Miquel Barceló, professor ath the Faculty of Computing from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Joan Úbeda, Head of Media 3.14, of MEDIAPRO group, dedicated to documentary and series broadcasting, and Vladimir de Semir, Director of the OCC. In addition, the newspaper Público will distribute the first DVD of the series Cosmos.

  • Documentary Universo extremo

    Documentary <em>Universo extremo</em>

    The Catalan Association of Scientific Communication, in collaboration with the OCC (UPF), has organized "Drawer of science", a cycle dedicated to documentaries and information about frontier science, in which will also be time for debate.

    From next 26 October, a Tuesday of each month at 18:30 you have an appointment at the Auditorium of the Campus of Communication at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. The series opens with the screening of the documentary "Universo Extremo", which shows how the MAGIC telescope detects and analyzes the gamma rays that reach Earth from the most remote part of the Universe.

    To discuss the documentary, the session will be attended by its director, Maria Teresa Soto, and its producer, Jose Ignacio Latorre, director of Centro de Ciencias de Benasque Pedro Pacual.

    A tribute to Fernando Krahn (1935-2010)

    The OCC, in the framework of the XV Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication (IDEC-UPF), has organized for the next Tuesday 2 November a memorial dedicated to the illustrator Fernando Krahn, who died on 18 February this year.

    The OCC feels the duty to pay tribute to Krahn for two main reasons: first, for his enormous humanity as a person and the close relationship he had with the Observatory; and secondly, for his great work of illustrator and, in particular , for the special dedication in the field of scientific illustration.

    The tribute ceremony will be held in the Auditorium of the Campus of Communication at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and will involve Fernanda Krahn Uribe, daughter of the illustrator, teacher of Spanish language and novelist, David Jou, Professor of Physics of the Condensed Matter at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and poet, and Vladimir de Semir, journalist and director of the OCC.

    Release of the SAM 2009 Report

    On Tuesday 9thNovember, the Auditorium of Campus of Communication of the Pompeu Fabra University will host the launch of the SAM 2009 Report about Food Safety in the Media. The paper analyzes the media coverage in the area of Catalonia in 2009 devoted to the security and safety issues of what we eat.

    The event also will show the activities of the
    SAM Platform and the roundtable "Who pays the communication mistakes? Assessment and recommendations" in order to analyze the role of the media, administration and companies in the communications strategies related to food issues and the consequences of this communication on consumers.

    Drawer of science with <em>Tron</em>

    On Tuesday 30 November at 18:30, it will take place the second session of the series "Drawer of science" in the auditorium of the Campus of Communication of the Pompeu Fabra University. On this occasion, the session is a cinema-forum about the movie Tron" (Steven Lisberger, 1982). After the viewing, a debat about topics such as virtual reality, new technologies of information and communication, the evolution of computing and the future of cinema in the rise of the Internet will be held.

    The forum will be attended by Jaume Ripoll, editor of Cameo and project director of Filmin, and Jordi Delgado, professor of Department of Language and Information Systems of the UPC and associate researcher of the Laboratory of Complex Systems (UPF), and David Sierra, promoter manager of the Unit of Technological Development in Artificial Intelligence (IIIA-CSIC). The debate will be moderated by Octavi Planells (OCC).

    "Drawer of science" is a cycle dedicated to audiovisual information and the latest scientific news in which there is also room for discussion. It is organised by the Catalan Association on Science Communication, with the collaboration of the OCC (UPF).

    The city of Berlin will host the next 1st December the closing conference of the European project e-KnowNet, in which, the OCC has been involved.

    The e-KnowNet closing conference is organized in cooperation with Online Educa Berlin 2010, the largest global e-learning conference and will take place at the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin (German Museum of Technology).

  • Release of the catalan version of Galileo's Sidereus nuncius

    Release of the catalan version of Galileo's <em>Sidereus nuncius</em>

    The Observatory of Science Communication (OCC-UPF ), in the framework of the Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication (IDEC-UPF), has organized the release of the Catalan edition of the famous "Sidereus nuncius", by Galileo Galilei, which has been promoted by the National Museum of Science and Technology (MUNCYT).

    The MUNCYT, directed by Ramón Núñez, to celebratek the fourth anniversary of the original publication of Galileo Galilei in Latin, has promoted the release of "Sidereus nuncius" in the four official languages of Spain. This means that for the first time in history it has an edition translated into Catalan, work done by the linguist Joan Carbonell, of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

    In December 14th at 19:00, Ramon Nunez, director of MUNCYT, and Vladimir de Semir, Director of the OCC-UPF, will introduce this scientific treatise based on astronomical observations, which can be considered as the first scientific paper of history.

    This event also falls within the series "Science drawer" organized by the Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC), which is held once a month in the Campus of Communication - UPF with the collaboration of the OCC-UPF.

    Presentation of the 2009 Quiral Report

    The Vila Casas Foundation, along with the Observatory of Science Communication, Pompeu Fabra University (OCC-UPF), will release on Tuesday, 21st December , the 2009 Quiral Report, Medicine, Communication and Society, which analyzes the media coverage that the five largest circulation newspapers in the state -El Pais, El Mundo, ABC, La Vanguardia and El Periodico- gave to the medical and health issues during 2009.

    The event will be chaired by Miquel Ylla-Català Genís, president of the Reial Acadèmia de Farmàcia de Catalunya and Antoni Vila Casas, president of the Vila Casas Foundation. The report will be presented by Vladimir de Semir, director of the OCC-UPF, and Gema Revuelta, deputy director of OCC-UPF.

    Opening of the XVI Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication

    On Monday 7thFebruary, the Campus of Communication at the University Pompeu Fabra (UPF) will hold the opening ceremony of the XVI edition of the Master in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication IDEC-UPF. The event will include the conference "The meeting of science with society. Objectives of the European program Science in Society", by Octavi Quintana Trias. Within the Directorate General for Research of the European Commission, Mr. Quintana is the head of Directorate B, which corresponds to the European Research Area. The opening ceremony will also include the speeches of Enric Banda, Director of the Area of Science, Research and Environment of the Fundación "La Caixa", Josep Joan Moreso, Rector of the UPF, and Vladimir de Semir, Director of the Observatory of Science Communication-UPF, which manages the Master.

  • ‘Calaix de ciència’: 25 years of nuclear crisis. From Chernobyl to Fukushima

    On Tuesday April 26th at 19.00 h. the Campus of Communication of the UPF will hold a new session of the ‘Calaix de la Ciència’. This event will be focused on nuclear energy, because that same day is the 25th anniversary of the tragic accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

    Vladimir de Semir, director of theOCC-UPF, will moderate the debate "25 years of nuclear crisis: from Chernobyl to Fukushima" where Jordi Bruno, director of the Enresa-Amphosof the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunyawill participate.

    This session will discuss the evolution of the nuclear crisis which began in 1986 in the Ukrainian town until the accident occurred recently on the Japan.

    "Calaix de ciència" is a cycle dedicated to audiovisual information on science and discussion. It is organized by the Associació Catalana de Comunicació Científica, in collaboration with the Observatori de la Comunicació Científica-UPF.

  • The Science of the Simpson

    Marco Malaspina, journalist and scientist , published in 2007 the great book called 'The Science of the Simpsons' on the appearance of science subjects in the famous TV cartoons of the same name, "The Simpsons". In Spain this book was published by the editorialBromera.

    Malaspina, who works in the communications department of the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica de Bolonia, will give a talk about the relation of Simpson’s cartoons and science on Tuesday May 17 at 19.30h as a part of the cultural activities of the Master in Science Communication IDEC-UPF. The event will be presented by the Director of the Scientific Communication Observatory-UPF, Vladimir de Semir.
